AYERS Thomas Private No. 23706 8th Battalion Wiltshire (Duke of Edinburgh's Own) Regiment .

Born in Highworth, Wiltshire in 1888 son of Thomas Ayers who married Ann Elizabeth Butcher at Walford, Herefordshire on 4th February 1884, but then died in 1889. Annie then married
James Ockley, a mat maker, at Highworth on 24th December 1892, and in 1911 they were living at 5 Eastrop Terrace, Highworth, with Thomas working as a gardener's labourer.
Thomas died on 15th March 1916 at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset, cause not specified, and was buried on the 17th - no grave number noted.


BADCOCK John Richard Private No. 302225 Tank Corps Depot also Labour Corps No. 103831.

Born in Peckham, Surrey on 14th February 1882, son of John Richard Babcock, a draper and tailor, and his wife Florence Jane Robinson. John Jnr. married Florence Helena Riches at
Chelsea, London in 1908 and in 1911 she was living at 7 Kerrison Road, Battersea, London, but John is missing, so I assume he was away in the Army. He died at Bovington Camp
Military Hospital on 28th October 1918 aged 38, but cause of death not stated. He was buried on 1st November - no grave number noted. His parents John and Florence had already
lost three other sons during 1917 - two serving away in Gaza, Egypt and the third working in a munitions factory as a result of an explosion.


BAXTER Thomas Rifleman No. 7014010 Royal Ulster Rifles.

Born in Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland on 4th January 1918 son of Samuel James Baxter, a labourer, and his wife Bridgit May McMaster who died in Birmingham in August 1938.
Army records show Thomas "Died" at Bovington Camp, Dorset on 2nd October 1939, without giving a cause of death, and he was buried in grave number 30 on the 6th. His
burial record gave his address as 10 Great Francis Street, Birmingham. His younger brother David Troupe Baxter born 1924 died in May 1944 serving at Kohima, India.


BICKERTON Clifford Private No. 1555545 Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1915 (not 1913 per CWGC) son of George Henry Bickerton, a carpenter and joiner, and his wife Lucy A. Harper. Clifford married Iris Ellen Taylor at
Hereford in July 1940, but died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset (cause of death not stated) on 9th August 1943, and was buried in grave number 19 on the 12th. His
widow Iris was continuing to live at Hereford.


BROWN Herbert Private No. 16652 9th Battalion Royal Berkshire (Princess Charlotte of Wales Own) Regiment.

Army and burial records show he was born in 1894 and his father was called Harry, but I failed to find any information about his family. He died at Bovington Camp Military
Hospital on 24th December 1915 and was buried in the 26th. No cause of death, nor a grave number were noted.


CAMPBELL Leopold Constantine Craftsman No. JCA / 1931748 Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

He was born in 1921 but I failed to find any personal information so was he born abroad? Army records show he died on 21st May 1947 at the the Military Hospital, Bovington Camp,
Dorset and was then buried in grave No 38 on the 23rd. It did not state any cause of death.


CARTER John William Trooper No. 7938872 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1915 (not 1913 per CWGC) son of George Henry Bickerton, a carpenter and joiner, and his wife Lucy A. Harper. Clifford married Iris Ellen Taylor at
Hereford in July 1940, but died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset (cause of death not stated) on 9th August 1943, and was buried in grave number 19 on the 12th. His widow Iris
was continuing to live at Hereford.


CAVE John William O'Halloran Rifleman No. 6912978 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own).

Born in Brentford, Middlesex in 1913, son of William Edgar and Lily Cave of Notting Hill, London. He died on 4th October 1939 at Bovington Camp, Dorset cause not found, and was
buried in grave number 13 on the 6th.


CONIBERE Albert Victor Private No. 18755 3rd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment previously Somerset Light Infantry No. 34121.

Born in Bristol, Gloucestershire in April 1897, son of Walter John Conibere, a mariner/ seaman, and his wife Emma Jane Montacute. Army records say Albert
died on 5th October 1916, aged 19, but gave no cause of death. His parents were then living at 209 Coronation Road, Ashton Gate, Bristol.


COOKE Henry Colin William Robswood Lieutenant No. 184257 Royal Tank Regiment and Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1909, son of Henry Robswood Cooke who served in the Royal Engineers in W W One, and his wife Sarah Jane Livingston. Army
records show that he was "Accidentally Killed" without giving details on 18th May 1941, with his death registered at Dorchester. He was buried on 26th
in grave number 34 when his address was Officers Mess, Bovington Camp, 52nd Training Regt. R.A.C. In 1945 his parents address was recorded as ? Okenford, Braeside,
Ringwood, Hampshire.


DAY John Studley Trooper No. 14278495 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Kingston Upon Hull Yorkshire in 1923, son of John Studley Day and his wife Beatrice Tilson. John Snr. was a carpenter and merchant seaman who died at
sea on M.V. Dixcove on 23rd September 1941. John Jnr. died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 3rd September 1941 aged 20, but cause not stated.
He was buried in grave number 18 on the 7th. His widowed mother was living at Aldbrough, Yorkshire.


DOLMAN Ivan Trooper (known as Jack) No. 7888714 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Halifax, Yorkshire in June 1919 son of Mark Dolman, a general labourer, and his wife Mary Ann Craven. Ivan died a Bovington Camp, Dorset on 11th November
1939 aged 20, but cause of death not stated. He was buried in grave number 14 on the 15th. His parents were living at Barkisland, Yorkshire.


GREEN Ivan Tremayne Private No. 2365804 1st Canadian Tank Battalion.

Born on 14th September 1898 at Beeton, Ontario, Canada son of Alfred George Green, a teacher, and his wife Alma Ida Ferguson. Ivan was also a teacher when he enlisted
on 24th April 1914, but having arrived in this country he was recorded as seriously ill with pneumonia on 13th October 1918 and died on October 21st at
Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset. His parents were living at Georgetown, Ontario.


HAYES Edward Sidney Private No. 5028 16th Battalion Australian Infantry Force.

Born in Bermondsey, London on 8th July 1892, son of Edward Thomas Hayes, a printer and compositor and his wife Sarah Mullett Nunn. The family sailed to Australia on
17th September 1897 and settled in Western Australia. Edward was working as a cabinet maker when he enlisted on 14th December 1915, and was promoted Acting Sergeant on
3rd March 1916 in France, but then fell ill and reverted back to Private on 28th May 1916. On 9th September he was transferred on the Hospital Ship Dieppe to Chatham,
Kent Military Hospital, then to the Military Hospital at Bovington Camp. There he died on 5th November 1916, of suspected cerebral spinal meningitis and cerebral
tumour. His parents were living at Evelyn Road, Claremont, Western Australia. His brother Graham Frederick Hayes born 1895 died serving in France in August 1916.


HAYWARD Harry Private No. 34757 256th Company Royal Defence Corps previously Gloucestershire Regiment No. 3972.

Born in Bothenhampton, Dorset in 1872 son of Thomas Hayward, a farm labourer who died in 1888, and his wife Mary Phillips who died in 1923. Thomas died on 2nd January
1917 at Bovington Camp, Dorset but cause not found, and was buried on the 5th - no grave number recorded.



JARRETT Robert Charles Corporal No. 7401074 Royal Army Medical Corps.

Born in Stepney, London on 21st July 1901 son of Andrew William Jarrett, a dock labourer who died in 1931, and his wife Selina Hunt who died in 1928. Robert married Evelyn Rose
Ellen Green at Leytonstone, Essex on 7th February 1937 and in 1939 they were living at 55 Richmond Road, Leytonstone, where Robert was working as a carpenter and french polisher.
He died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 19th April 1945, cause of death not stated, and was buried in grave number 36 on the 23rd.


LEONARD John Private No. 5970 10th Battalion Lancashire Regiment.

Army records suggest he was born in 1886 and was from Rochdale, Lancashire but I could find no family details that tied in with that. His Army Soldiers Effects page lists no
relative. He died at Bovington Camp, Dorset on 24th April 1915 and was buried on the 28th, but no grave number recorded.


LESTER Albert Ambrose Corporal No. 558434 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Sunderland Co. Durham in 1919 son of Laurence Ernest Lester, an electrical engineer who died in 1926, and his wife Lilian Lucy Violet Armfelt. Lilian remarried
in Surrey on 9th March 1935 to George Humphries. Albert died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 12th August 1945, cause of death not stated, and was
buried in grave number 37. His probate to his mother Lillian on 12th August 1945 for £159 17s. 9d gave their address as 13 Cambridge Park, East Twickenham, Surrey.


LLOYD Lionel Bertie Eld Lieutenant Canadian Mounted Rifles.

Born in Midnapore, Alberta, Canada on 13th June 1889 after his parents had travelled to Canada in 1883 from Horselydown, South London. His parents were Benjamin Simmonds
Lloyd, a rancher in Canada, and his wife Jane Elizabeth Eld. Lionel was a rancher when he enlisted on 4th October 1915, but later on 24th September 1917 he was
seconded to the Royal Air Force. Sadly he was taken ill with pneumonia and died on 12th October 1918 aged 29 at the Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset,
and was buried on the 16th in grave number B. 1.


LOWE Arthur Sidney James Warrant Officer 2nd Class No. 7871351 Royal Tank Corps and Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Peckham, Surrey in March 1900, son of William Lowe, a bricklayer who died in 1949, and his wife Ada Isabel Sells who died in 1942. Arthur in 1921 was a
Corporal in 3rd Battalion Tank Corps, before in June 1921 he married Florence Elizabeth May Smith at Greenwich, Kent. He died at Dorset County Hospital,
Dorchester on 9th July 1947, cause of death not stated, and was buried in grave No. 90 on the 14th. His probate to his widow Florence on 12th August 1947 for
£198 6s gave their address as "Leafy Dell" Andover Green, Bovington Camp, Dorset.


MCCORMACK George 2nd Lieutenant Royal Tank Corps.

Born on 13th August 1888 at Galway, Sligo, Ireland son of William McCormack who died in August 1918 and his wife Mary Robinson. George died of influenza and pneumonia at
Wool Military Hospital (Broughton ?) on 28th October 1918. No grave number is recorded.


MCTAGGART William Private No. 13095403 Pioneer Corps.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland on 5th November 1903, son of James and Elizabeth McTaggart. He married Eleanor May Pearce at Romford, Essex on 31st May 1930, and in 1939 they
were living at Talbot Cottage, East Stoke, Wareham, Dorset. Army records show he died on 5th March 1942 aged 38 at Ormskirk Military Hospital, Lancashire but no
cause of death is shown. He was buried on 11th in grave number 69. His widow Eleanor remarried on 5th July 1945 to William C. Kellaway, the marriage being registered
at Poole.


MARCANTONIO Laurence Joseph Gunner H/Q 105th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery.

Born in Hammersmith, London on 20th March 1921, son of Benjamin Marcantonio, a foreman bread baker in 1939, and his wife Florence Ada. In 1939 the family were living at 166
Goldhawk Road, Hammersmith, London, when Laurence was working as a clerk/cashier. Army records said that he was "Accidentally killed" on 28th March 1942 aged 22 without
giving full details. He was buried on 4th April in grave number 52.


MERRYWEATHER Frank Private No. 25062 9th Battalion Royal Berkshire (Princess Charlotte of Wales Own) Regiment.

Born in Reading, Berkshire in September 1882 son of Thomas Merryweather and his wife Martha Jane Knott. In 1911 the family lived at 20 Filey Road, Reading and
both Frank and his father worked at the local biscuit factory. In July 1913 he married Mabel Maria Stevens at Reading, but died at Bovington Camp Military
Hospital, Dorset on 23rd August 1916 (cause not found) and was buried on the 26th - no grave number noted.


MURRELL David Alexander Private No. 3766832 30th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment, previously Nos 74821 K L R and 50692 Labour Corps.

Born in Liverpool, Lancashire on 3rd June 1910 son of William Murrell, a fish hawker who died in October 1914, and his wife Mary Catherine Gorman. He had
enlisted on 8th February 1929 serving in India and was demobbed in 1937, then re-inlisted in 1939. In October 1937 he had married Mary Jane Barnes (nee Crabb)
at Liverpool, and they were living at 243 Whitefield Road, Liverpool. Army records show he died on 20th April 1942 aged 31 "of Wounds" maybe at Wareham
Military Hospital, Dorset (death registered at Poole), and was buried on 25th in grave number A. 71.


NIVEN Maurice Carmichael 2nd Lieutenant No. 143201 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own) Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Fareham, Hampshire on 11th May 1909 son of Col. Oliver Carmichael Niven H.M. Army Retd. and his wife Edith Mary Kate Miller. Listed arriving into London
from Mauritius with his mother Edith and siblings on SS Gascon on 29th October 1910. In December 1937 at Gosport, Hampshire he married Evelyn Agnes Elliot and
in 1939 they were living at "Calapana" Hill Head, Hampshire. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. on 10th August 1940, but his death, listed on 29th December 1940,
is a mystery, as he was not buried in grave number 35 until 18th April 1941. Army records said first that he was "Missing believed Drowned" later altered to
"Accidentally Killed" but I found no further details. His probate to his widow Evelyn on 13th August 1941 was for £1,126 9s. 2d, still giving their address
as "Calapana" Hill Head.


NORTHFIELD Sidney Charles Trooper No. 7942961 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Lewisham, Kent on 8th June 1903, son of Edward Northfield, a bricklayer who died in 1925, and his wife Frances Emily Death. On 4th August 1920 he joined
the Royal Marines Light Infantry No. 20831, but I do not know for how long he served. In October 1930 he married Frances May Collett at Kingston, Surrey,
and in 1939 he was working as a bus conductor when they were living at 16 Kingscote Road, New Malden, Surrey. Army records said that he died at Bovington
Camp, Dorset on 1st October 1941 as a result of an "Accident" without giving further details. He was buried in grave number 32 on the 6th.


RICHARDSON Frank Private No. 20966 9th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry

Born in Nettlebed, Oxfordshire on 27th May 1879 son of William Richardson, a gardener who died in October 1903, and his wife Ann Lise who died in 1918.
On 12th December 1903 at Nettlebed he married Mary Ann Readings and in 1915 they were living at Priest Hill, Nettlebed, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.
Frank died on 14th December 1915 at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset, but cause of his death not found. He was then buried on the 17th no grave number
recorded. His brother Frederick born 1874 died serving in France with the Labour Corps in January 1918.


ROOKE George Henry Private No. 46641 Dorsetshire Regiment Depot.

Burial records give his full name saying he was born in 1899 and Army Soldiers Effects Page say his father was called Lawrence, but I failed to find his family.
He died at Bovington Military Hospital, Dorset on 8th January 1920 cause not found, and was buried on the 13th. Was the reference to his father Lawrence
an error?


ROSE Thomas Frederick Private No. 23084 9th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

Born in Hook Norton, Oxfordshire in October 1897 son of Thomas Frederick Rose, an iron quarry worker, and his wife Elizabeth Ann Harris. He died at Bovington
Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 11th June 1916, cause not stated, and was buried on the 15th, grave number not recorded.


ROUTLEDGE Charles Pioneer No. WR / 337640 Inland Waterways and Docks.

Born in Farlam, Cumberland (now Cumbria) in 1872 son of Isaac Routledge, an engine fitter who died after Charles in 1919, and his wife Jane Dodd
who died in 1903. In 1901 Charles was lodging at Middlesborough, Yorkshire working as a railway goods porter. He died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital,
Dorset, cause not recorded, on 16th July 1918 and was buried on the 20th, grave number not recorded.



SHAW Phillip Samuel Private No. 320530 Tank Corps Depot .

Born in Devonport, Devon on 14th April 1902 son of Philip Shaw, a Royal Naval Seaman, and his wife Amelia Heath. In 1911 the family were living at 5 Clowance Street,
Devonport. He died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset, on 13th January 1920, cause not stated, and was buried on the 15th, grave number not recorded.


SLATER Frederick Lance Corporal No. 16992 9th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

Burial records confirm his Christian name and say he was born in 1880, but give no clue about parents or place of birth, and I cannot trace his family. He died at
Bovington Camp, Dorset on 13th April 1916 and was buried on the 17th no grave number recorded.


SORZANO Leonard Gunner No. 91868 "H" Battery, Heavy Branch, Machine Gun Corps.

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies on 30th December 1890 son of Leonard Joseph Soriano Basante and his wife Sarah Emma Needham Lennon. Married Violet
Olive J. Collins at Port of Spain, Trinidad on 9th September 1915 before he enlisted in October 1916 and sailed to UK on SS Serrana arriving into London
on 29th October 1916. At that time he was a clerk living at The Fernery, St. Ann's, Trinidad. He died of pneumonia at Bovington Camp Military Hospital,
Dorset on 19th February 1917. His Sorzano family can be traced back to 1766 in Venezuela in South America.


STYLES William Sirrell (known as Jock) Major No. 134837 50th Royal Tank Regiment and Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in 1913 at Old Kilpatrick West, Dumbartonshire, Scotland son of William and Janet Simpson Styles. On 22nd June 1940 he was promoted from Sergeant to Lt. with R T R and
in October 1941 he married Barbara Jeanne Rickard at Bournemouth. Army records show that he was listed as "Dangerously ill, later as Dead" on 15th August 1945 aged 32 at
Royal Victoria Hospital, Bournemouth - no cause of death was stated. He was buried in grave number 72. His address then was "Sunway" Hillcrest Road, Bournemouth


SUMMONS Sydney Richard Battery Sergeant Major No. 1401344 9th Fire Command, Royal Garrison Artillery, previously 4th Signal Battalion R G A No. 14048.

Born in Bedminster, Bristol in September 1882 son of William George Summons, a master builder, and his wife Mary Maria Larkam who lived at 1 Victoria Road, East Street,
Bedminster, Bristol. He joined the Army in the early 1900s, but died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 8th August 1921 and was buried on the 12th, but
no grave number noted.


TAGG John Leslie Trooper No. 7887619 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Preston, Hull, Yorkshire in March 1920 son of Charles Frank Tagg, a dock worker moving coal, and his wife Evelyn Lydia Benns living at East End Road,
Preston, Hull. Army records list him as having "Died" giving no details at Bovington Camp, Dorset on 30th November 1919, and he was buried in grave number 15 on December
4th. CWGC lists him as a Private, should be Trooper.


TELFORD Thomas Trooper No. 14684269 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Gateshead, Co. Durham in November 1924 son of Thomas Telford and his wife Mary Catherine Connelly who lived at 51 Southfields Road, Wandsworth,
Surrey. Army records show Thomas Jnr. died of an unspecified "Accident" at Bovington Camp, Dorset on 2nd August 1944. He was aged 19 and buried in grave
No. 54 on the 5th.


WADE Patrick Armigel Trooper No. 7900351 Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in Alton, Hampshire on 24th November 1918 son of Richard Ramsden Wade a medical practitioner, and his wife Constance Irene Lord who lived at Lavender
Cottage, Grayshott, Surrey. In 1939 Patrick was an undergraduate at Oxford University. Army records list him as "Died" at Bovington Camp on 29th July 1940,
but gave no further details, and he was buried in grave number 16. His probate to his father for £279 16s. 3d on 4th January 1941. Note CWGC list him as Officer
Cadet, but the Army as Trooper. His brother Richard Thomas Christopher Wade born 1921 was a Flying Officer RAF but died in a road accident in Italy on
27th August 1944 and was buried in Biguglia War Cemetery in Italy.


WALLINGTON Christopher Thomas Major O.B.E. No. 15317 Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

Born in Dublin, Ireland on 25th November 1878, son of Christopher John Wallington who in 1891 was Quarter Master Sergeant Major in the Royal Horse Artillery who
died in 1905, and his wife Bridgit Maud Kenny who died in 1921. I do not know when Christopher Jnr. joined the Army but in August 1914 he was serving in South Africa
and in 1921 was a Major living at Aintree, Lancashire. At some point he married Mary Ann Barron, maybe abroad as she was born in India. He was listed in Army
records as "Dangerously Ill" and died at Shaftesbury Military Hospital, Dorset on 21st March 1943, aged 64. He was buried in grave number 53. His probate to
his widow Mary on 28th June 1943 was for £2,818 13s 5d and gave their address as Moreuil House, Bovington Camp, Dorset.


WARD Vernon Lance Corporal No. 2684288 1st Canadian Tank Battalion. Previously 19th Canadian Dragoons and 3 years with 35th Alberta Light Horse.

Born in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire on 9th July 1891 son of Samuel Ward, a draper, and his wife Ester Morgan, who lived at 114 St. Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He
sailed to Canada on SS Lake Manitoba arriving in to Quebec on 11th October 1910. When he enlisted on 4th March 1918 he was a bank clerk working for the Bank of
Montreal at Calgary, Alberta. He died of pneumonia at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 29th October 1918 and was buried on the 31st, no grave number
was recorded.


WATTERSON William Thomas Fletcher Privare No. 4359 12th Battalion Manchester Regiment.

Born on Isle of Man on 30th September 1894 son of William Edward Patterson, a farm hand and later domestic gardener, and his wife Elizabeth Ann Cain, who lived at
127 Malew Street, Castletown, Isle of Man. In 1911 Fletcher was working as a cow man on a farm before enlisting, but he died at Bovington Camp, Dorset on 13th
October 1914 aged 19, and was buried on the 16th. The cause of his death not recorded.


WELLER Ernest Henry Lance Sergeant No. 7872216 Royal Tank Regiment and Royal Armoured Corps.

Born in 1902 at Lewes, Sussex son of Charles Weller, a labourer, and his wife Mary Kennard. Had joined the Army by 1921 when he was a Private at Wool in the Royal Tank Corps.
He married Millie May Craven at Wool on 8th February 1925 and they lived at 43 Andover Green, Bovington Camp. Ernest died at Tregantle, Fort Anthony, Cornwall
but no clue as to the circumstances or cause of death. He was aged 40 and buried on the 28th in grave number 71. Probate to his widow Millie on 8th June 1942 was for
£588 9s. 7d.


WELLER William Private No. 52130 Devonshire Regiment and No. 174296 318 Home Service Works Company, Labour Corps.

Born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire in July 1872, son of Samuel Weller, a varnish manufacturer who died in January 1916, and his wife Kate Taylor who had died in 1893.
He enlisted in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) on 28th November 1893 and served in India and South Africa including 2nd Boer War, but was discharged at end of his 12
years service on 27th November 1905. In 1911 he was working in Bristol as a carpenter and joiner. He re-enlisted in the Army in December 1914, but died at Bovington Camp
Military Hospital, Dorset on 21st July 1918, cause of death not recorded. He was buried on the 24th but no grave number recorded.


WIDDOWS George Joseph Driver No. 14637074 Royal Corps of Signals.

Born in Bermondsey, London in 1907, son of George Widdows, a carman in 1911 and later a horse keeper for a grain firm, and his wife Florence Singer. On 25th December
1935 George Jnr. married Emily Louisa Newington at Southwark, London, and in 1939 they were living at Cowan Street, Camberwell, London. George is listed in Army
records as having died at Bovington Camp Military Hospital, Dorset on 17th October 1944, but no cause of death is noted. He was buried in grave number 17 on the 20th.
Later his widow Emily moved to Leeds, Yorkshire.

Born in Portland, Dorset on 1st September 1904, but parents not known as he was adopted by William Cecil Smith, a carpenter and wheelwright, and his wife Jeanette
Annie Smith who lived at 178, East Burton, Wool, Dorset. In 1939 he was working as a lengths man on local roads before in 1942 (probably at East Burton, Registered
Poole?) he married Elsie Annie Francis White, but sadly she died on 20th January 1945. William died on 10th July 1945, aged 41, but Army records do not show how or where he
died, his death was not registered in Dorset. He was buried on the 14th July.
