05 Apr 1841 - Henry son of John BARNES married Jane Joyce aged 18 daughter of Joseph JACOB

[Note:- Henry BARNES (1816-1876) - He was Baptised at Stour Provost in Dorset on 20th Oct 1816 the son of a carpenter and Joiner John BARNES (1780-1859) by his 2nd wife Martha nee HISCOCK.

His father John BARNES (1780-1859) had been baptised at Wimborne Minster on 5th June 1780 the son of William Barnes and learned his trade at the hands of William Green a carpenter of Wimborne Minster as his name appears in the UK Register of Duties paid for Apprentices' Indentures on 16th July 1789. John married his 2nd wife Martha HISCOCK at Stour Provost on 9th Jan 1815 who had been born in the parish & baptised there on 20th April 1788 recorded as the daughter of Lazarus & Elizabeth HISCOCK. John & Martha had another son they named John Barnes also baptised at Stour Provost on 24th March 1818. There is no other trace of the family in Stour Provost and I have not located Martha's death. John BARNES senior however is living on his own in Dorchester in St Peters Parish at South Walks in the June 1841 Census working as a builder and his age has been correctly placed into the 60 to 64 age band (i.e. born between 1777 & 1781). He was appointed churchwarden of St Peters Church in 1842 serving until 1847. By the 1851 Census John is living at the back of High West Street in Dorchester and now confirmed to be a widower born at Wimborne and running a succesful business as a builder employing 11 men. According to both Pigot's Directory of 1844 and Slater's directory for Dorchester of 1852 (under heading Carpenters & Builders) his business was actually located in South Street.

John BARNES filed for bankrupcy on 4th May 1857 and a lot of background concerning his business is contained in newspaper articles. Link to transcription in Southern Times & Dorset County Herald dated Sunday 30 May 1857 and Dorset County Chronicle for Thursday 19th Aug 1858. John BARNES was buried at Dorchester Civic Cemetery on 19th Oct 1859 recorded as from St Peters Parish when his age was given as being 82 (actually 79) .

Henry and Jane Joyce Barnes also appear in the June 1841 Census living in South Street. (Henry's age is in the 20 to 24 age band and his occupation that of an Architect ; Jane Barnes is in the 15 to 19 age band) They later had one child a son they named Walter Henry BARNES who was baptised at St Peters Church 21 Apr 1843 shortly before Jane Joyce BARNES nee Jacob (1823-1843) was buried on 4th May 1843 at the Civic Cemetery described as 20 years old and from St Peters parish -- probably died following complications following the birth of her son.

Henry Barnes remarried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester to Thera May Gilbert GARLAND on 25th Sep 1850. Walter Henry BARNES is shown in the 1851 Census for St Peters aged 8 years and living with his grandfather John BARNES again described as a Builder by trade. Henry Constantine HUXTABLE (1826-1871) by his wife Eliza AMIER (1824-1901). After the Indian Mutiny in 1857 Queen Victoria issued a proclamation by which Company rule over India came to an end and the British Raj was established. The family returned to England and his father was appointed as curate in sole charge of Hendford in Yeovil in 1858-1860 and then Rector of Bettiscombe in Somerset (1859-1867). In 1867 his father was appointed to St Marys Church Port Louis and Bishop of Mauritius and died there in June 1871. I have not been able to locate him in the 1871 Census so it's possible he had gone to Mauritius to help his mother see to his fathers affairs and her return to live at Newport Road Barnstaple in Devon by 18th June 1871.Clearly he was well educated and studied law as he next appears already working in Dorchester at the age of 28 in the April 1881 Census in lodgings at 6 High West Street. I suspect he had already working for his brides father Giles SYMONDS Town Clerk and Solicitor in Dorchester.

Harriett SYMONDS (1857-1943) was the 8th child from the marriage of Giles SYMONDS (1812-1892) to Jane STICKLAND (1816-1877) at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 7th June 1841. She had been baptised at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 01 Apr 1857 and her father was a well respected member of the Corporation of Dorchester being a Solicitor, Town Clerk to the Board of Health and Borough Magistrates and among others County Coroner & Registrar. In 1861 Harriett and her family were living in Retreat Cottage in Fordington . By 1871, aged 14, she was being taught by a Governess Maria Johnson resident at 38 South Street close to number 10 where the family were then living and she remained until marriage in 1882.

In 1889 Henry Anthony Huxtable was elected Mayor of Dorchester and was working with another Solicitor (George James William Andrews) and trading as "Andrews Son & Huxtable" based in South Street. He was one of the 12 Councillors of Dorchester and Clerk to the Commissioners of Taxes. Children from this marriage:-

[Note:- Banns of marriage were read in his church of Holy Trinity and also St Peters on 12th, 19th and 26th Feb 1898. Alfred Russell was the son of James and Matilda Russell and born at Bere Regis in 1868. His father was a butcher by trade but also a farmer of 50 acres and the 1871 Census shows him aged 3 as the 7th of their 8 children. He grew up in Bere Regis, still there in 1881, but by 1891 he was working in Dorchester for Genge's Dept Store in High West Street employed as a drapers assistant. His bride Emma Mary GUY was the daughter of John & Anna GUY and had been baptised at St peters Church on 7th Sep 1864.

Alfred and Emma are in the 1901 Census living at No.7 St Helens Rd in St Peters Parish Dorchester. Alfred is now described as a manager (Tailors & Outfitters) aged 33 born at Bere Regis and Emma May aged 36 with their 9 month old daughter Majorie A.M Russell. So probably at this point still employed at Genges. Very soon after this he set up his own business as pictured in the 2nd postcard posted in 1907 in my collection of postcards about 'South Walks' . The 3rd card shows his business entrance in South Street with his window advertisement in the upstairs window where it states "A RUSSELL, Tailor and Breeches Maker" . From an article in the Dorset County Chronicle dated 20th Jan 1910, when he gave a character ref for one of his employees, he refers to having employed him for 7 years next March so it was up and running by March 1903. Unfortunately Alfred died and was buried at the Civic Cemetery 9Grave 1247) in 1914.
